The Ship Shop was at Federation Square throughout the fashion week.

‘A new eco-friendly way of retailing! The Gorman Organic Ship Shop is a mobile used shipping container, with the transportable Ship Shop constructed from recycled ply(wood) and a variety of sustainable materials.’
What was it about?
The Gorman Organic Ship Shop encompasses the change that Gorman (among other ‘green’ retailers) is trying to pioneer in Australia in terms of how retailers work. The range of clothing sold in the shop is all made of bamboo, organic cotton knit or organic cotton Japanese denim (certified 100% organic cotton).
What were the other people like that attended?
The shop aims to attract everybody that is interested in fashion. Although, it tends to attract environmentalists interested in the way it is being run, what it is made of etc. as well as architects appreciating the design of the shop, fashionistas and fashion students, as well as curious passers by curious to learn more.
What was their reaction?
There is a mixed bag of reactions to the Ship Shop, most of which are positive in learning more about the brand. There are the occasional cynical environmentalists who need more information than is given in the handout or fashion students wishing for more information.
How can these ideas or images motivate action or change opinions in the public?
The Ship Shop has pioneered a new way of thinking and dealing with environmental issues in a retail environment. I predict it will inspire other brands to follow in its footsteps and be more imaginative in solving issues within its own company’s processes and image.
Have you been inspired, has your view changed?
As a worker in the Ship Shop last time it ‘docked,’ I was given a rare opportunity to chat to the public who came to check it out. The information and views they relayed on to me were very inspiring and had a profound impact on how I perceived the current retail environment in Australia, and on my own goals in terms of what is important to me in design and work ethically and environmentally.
